8 Count Interview: Evander Holyfield’s son Evan Holyfield Boxing as Amateur

Chris Thurman of 8CN caught up with 16-year-old Evan Holyfield, son of legendary boxing champion Evander Holyfield, to discuss his amateur career and his plans to go pro. Evan recently headlined the high profile amateur competition Atlanta Corporate Fight Night 8 in Atlanta, Ga.

CT: How have the amateur fights been going? What is your record?

EH: They’ve been going well, a few hard ones, tough decisions. I’m 4-3.

CT: How long have you been competing at the amateur level?

EH: I started when I was 8 and I stopped for a real long time so about 4 or 5 years.

CT: How intent are you at becoming a professional boxer?

EH: I wanna become one really bad, just have to work for it.

CT: In what weight class do you plan to enter as you begin your professional career, and what weight class do you plan to fight in for the duration of your professional career?

EH: Welter to super middleweight.

CT: How involved is you father, Evander Holyfield, in your training?

EH: Both my mother and dad are involved, my mother makes sure I get to practice everyday. My father talks about his past fights and technique.

CT: Are you developing your own style? How much has your father’s style influenced you so far as a fighter?

EH: His style still lingers with me, moving around, bouncing and stuff. I’m starting to develop my own style, more so speed where he was a power, but I try to stay towards his style.

CT: How much of an impact has the legacy of Evander Holyfield had on you and your decision to become a boxer?

EH: It has some effect, but really I wanna fight for me, only for me, but fighting for him under his name. So I guess you could say a little.

CT: Who are some of your favorite active boxers?

EH: Manny Pacquiao, Timothy Bradley, Vasyl Lomachenko, and Yuriokis Gamboa.

CT: What recent fights have stood out to you in the last few years?

EH: Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley and Marquez, between him and Manny Pacquiao.

CT: What are some matchups that you would like to see?

EH: Certainly Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, and Andre Ward and Carl Froch.

CT: Are you interested in any other sports?

EH: I like football, baseball, and track.

CT: Do you have any other ambitions or interest outside of sports and boxing?

EH: Just finish school and go to college (Engineering).

If this young man has one half the heart, skills and desire of his father he will be a hell of a fighter. My top 10 fighters of my time are: Ali, Ray Leonard, Larry Holmes, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Salvador Sanchez, Wilfred Benitez, Evander Holyfield, Aron Pryor, George Foreman.
